I would like to begin by commending us for our aware, but not bogged-down, dissatisfied, but celebratory, fuck-it-but-don't-forget-about-it navigation of this thing called gender. Ashlee, thanks for inviting me, and wanting to invite me, to part of Bride Day, a total honor. In true dialogical fashion, I'd like to recount what Ben, Travis and I did during the day, as well as fill in some of the Jacob-inspired nighttime activities that the tasteful Ashlee didn't mention (but which I am not above) for which DCoates was also present as crucial strategist and participant.
The Subee rolled up on West Lynn, and after some quick pictures, rolled out to our own adventures (thanks for driving Ben). These adventures were waylaid by some crazy traffic, but we easily filled the car-time; Ben with his classic one-liners, Travis with his awkward, yet always insightful questioning of reality, and me with my overphilosophizing of everything. Man, that makes us sound like cartoons...we had normal conversation as well (including plans for Bachelor Weekend).
Our first stop was Natalie's apartment. this was pretty uneventful. I changed clothes.
Then we went to the cookout at Space12. It was the usual Vox suspects PLUS neighborhood folk. There was some huddling going on, but overall, it looked to be a successful event as far as mixing it up, and welcoming community members into the space (and therefore member-izing the Vox folk into the community as well) goes. The three of us helped twin brothers fill out the survey set up on the computers. I had fun meeting the coolly outspoken Demetrius. Although they were twins, one was significantly chubbier than the other. this led to some interesting conversations in the car driving away from Space12, mostly based on some bombastic remarks made by Travis... You can read a little more about this (Space12 opening, not Travis' comments) on my blog as well.
Next we stopped by UT to pick up Trav's cello, which is another way of saying: we helped Trav clean out his liquor cabinet away from home-liquor-cabinet. FYI, Travis is CRUNK for the second half of every performance.
After this we took Ben on his first trip to the Domain. The search for wedding clothes was unsuccessful, but it was a worthwhile trip anyway, for the company. However, Ben did pass up an opportunity to be a supermodel.
To close out boy-only time, we hung out at the TrAshlee apartment, via a harrowing experience with the self-checkout stand at HEB. Pizza, beer and episodes of Lost were the order of the early evening. One-by-one we trickled off; Ben to take our beloved 505'er to the airport, Trav to the symphony, and me with La Natalie and the Gobo back to the Marathon House.
Ashlee's account of the rest of the evening is pretty good, except for completely leaving out the Pee Debaucle of Bride Day '08. We were foiled in seeing our plan out to completion, but the raucous exploit of the planning itself, fueled by our camaraderie with Jacob in his time of need, was memorable to say the least, and totally worth feeling the warmth of everyone's pee in a cup.
I lift that cup now, as champagne will be lifted in a few short weeks: to Bride Day!
