On October 9th ....

1635 - Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was banished from Massachusetts because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams had founded Providence, Rhode Island as a place for people to seek religious freedom.
1781 - The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War took place in Yorktown, VA. The American forces, led by George Washington, defeated the British troops under Lord Cornwallis.
1940- John Lennon was born
1946 - The first electric blanket went on sale in Petersburg, VA.
1964 - The Rolling Stones cancelled the planned tour in South Africa because of an anti-apartheid embargo by the British Musicians' Union.
1967 - Che Guevara was executed by " Bolivian soldiers" (yeah, right).
1978 - David Bowie's "Stage" album was released by RCA Records.
AND of course...
1985: Jacob Beswick was born...

What can we say of this day then? That it was a day of revolutionaries- when revoluntionaries triumphed, when revolutionaries fought for what they believed until death or banishment.

This was a day when peacelovers were born; a day when excellent music was given to the world; a day when musician's agreed that racist political policy does not deserve rock music; and a day when people could bring constant warmth to their homes...

How appropriate that Jacob Beswick, a man who gives us warmth, loves peace and good music, and is, though he will deny it, a revolutionary for peace, antiracism, (non) religioustolerance and love was given to all of us.
